The information provided here is tentative!
We will hold a field camp informational meeting on April 16th, where we will provide more details on the schedule and answer your questions.
With that in mind, please use the following to help you prepare for summer 2019 UVU Geology Field Experience (Camp):
INSTRUCTORS: You will have five full weeks of field instruction and additional time for report writing. Instruction will be delivered by Dr. Daniel Stephen, Dr. Nathan Toke, Dr. Michael Bunds, and Dr. Michael Stearns
REQUIRED PRESENCE: The course will be a full-time commitment during Summer Block 1, don't schedule vacations or expect to have your weekends off. That being said, field camp is a really fun and rewarding experience that you will likely look back upon quite fondly!
ANTICIPATED (TENTATIVE) SCHEDULE:
Week 1 (May 8-10 - partial week): 2 Day orientation meeting to brush up on important field skills.
Week 2 (May 13-18): Field work, likely with Dr. Stephen, MOST LIKELY SOME PRIMATIVE CAMPING
Week 3 (May 19-25): Field work, likley with Dr. Toke and possibly also Dr. Bunds, POSSIBLY NOT CAMPING
Week 4 (May 26- June 1): Possibly a split week, continuing with Dr. Toke for 2 days and then field work with Dr. Bunds, PARTIALLY CAMPING
Week 5 (June 2-8): Possibly a split week continuing with Dr. Bunds and then field work with Dr. Stearns, MOST LIKELY CAMPING
Week 6 (June 9-16): Field work, likely with Dr. Stearns, MOST LIKELY CAMPING
Week 7 (June 17-21): Report writing, all material must be completely submitted before the end of the week!
COURSE EXPENSES: This year's class is 4 credit hours, UVU Tuition and Fees amount to: $966 + $141 (resident) or $2,971 + $141 (non-resident). In addition there is a $500 departmental lab fee to cover things like vehicles, camping, and fuel. So the base cost is: $1,607 for residents and $3,611 for non-residents (among the least expensive field camps in the country).
That being said you also should factor in the cost of food and incidentals during the trip, which can vary a lot (We recommend budgeting at least another $600-$1,000 to be safe - $20-30/day for food etc.). We also recommend forming a cooking team for some meals to save time/space/expenses.
It is worth noting that in summer 2020 the course credits will increase to 6 credits (an additional cost) and the course lab fee will increase $100. However, this will make the class better aligned with the amount of work involved, reflecting the fact that the class is truly a full summer block schedule. This will also make students eligible for financial aid for the summer and it will be commensurate with summer geology field camps elsewhere, allowing it to more easily transfer between institutions.
WHAT WE PROVIDE: Vehicles/fuel, Campsite Fees, Camp Stoves/Fuel, Large Coolers, Some Ice, Solar Showers, Base Maps and Instruction!
WHAT YOU BRING/ORGANIZE: Tents/Sleepingbags/Pads, Food Groups, Personal Field Mapping Gear and Tools, Necessary Toiletries/Medicines (a supply that will last you the entire field camp)
We will provide more information at a Field Camp Organizational Meeting on Tuesday, April 16th, 2019 at 1pm in Pope Science Room 110.
To get information on that meeting and other aspects of field camp please email Prof. Toke: nathan(dot)toke(at)uvu(dot)edu
In that email provide your name, uvid, preferred email address, your cell phone number, and indicate whether you are interested being a field camp driver.
Thanks for your interest and enthusiasm!
